  • "Let's just practice more." Jumping straight to action signals that the feeling doesn't matter; only the performance does. It can also reinforce the idea that math is about grinding through difficulty rather than understanding it, which is precisely the wrong message for a child who already feels like the effort isn't working.

  • "I was never good at math either." This one is well-intentioned and relatable, but it confirms that math ability runs in families and is largely inherited. That's the fixed mindset framing your child already holds, and hearing it from you makes it harder to challenge.

The phrase "haven't figured it out yet" is doing real work here. It separates the difficulty of the task from the ability of your child, shifting the conversation from identity, which feels fixed, to problem, which is solvable. This one works best in the moment, while the math is still open in front of them.

2. After a Bad Test or Grade Comes Home

A result has arrived, and your child is using it as evidence for the belief they already hold. The grade feels like confirmation.

"One test tells us where we are, not where we're going. Let's look at what tripped you upthat's the useful part."
