Preparing for the STAAR Math Test

STAAR Testing is two to four months away depending on subject and grade. But it is something you want to help your student start getting ready for in the near future.

Preparing for the State Test is different from preparing for a normal school test or pop quiz because the State Test is a cumulative review of all the curriculum a student is expected to master throughout the school year. So kids need the time to remind themselves of what was taught back in September and October.

Here’s some advice on how Houston students can prepare from Mathnasium’s very own, John Labuda, shared on FOX 26 News.

1. Start early. The more time you have to prepare, the less stressed your student will be. There’s no worse feeling than trying to cram a year’s worth of material into your brain the night before an important exam.
2. Rather than trying to study for everything at once, reach out to your student’s teacher to pinpoint what the areas for growth are for your student; that way you can focus on the material they will need the most practice time with.
3. Go to the Texas Education Agency website or your school districts ISD website for study resources. TEA shares what curriculum will be assessed and released test questions.
4. Seek professional help from Mathnasium, the math learning center, where your student can have a customized learning plan developed to fill in any foundational gaps.
