What Is a Multiple in Math?
A number that can be divided by another number with no remainder
In math, a multiple of a number is what you get when you multiply that number by a whole number. The numbers show up on a number’s times table are examples of multiples.
- The multiples of 2 are: 2, 4, 6, 8, …
- The multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ...

We say that
- 8 is a multiple of 2 (as well as 4) because 2 × 4 = 8
- 20 is a multiple of 4 (as well as 5) because 4 × 5 = 20
Multiples help us with:
- Finding the least common multiple
- Solving word problems involving time, patterns, or grouping
When Do Students Learn About Multiples?
Students begin learning about multiples when they explore patterns in numbers and develop fluency with multiplication.
Grades 3–5 – Introduction to Multiples
Students start identifying and listing multiples, use them in skip counting, and begin solving problems using the least common multiple (LCM).
Grades 6+ – Applying Multiples in Advanced Math
Students apply their understanding of multiples in topics like ratios, fractions, and problem solving.
