An output value is the result we get after applying an operation or function to an input value. It is the dependent variable, which means its value depends on what input we started with.
In a simple operation, the output is the answer. In 8 ÷ 2 = 4, the number 4 is the output value.
In a function, the output value is what we get after substituting the input and applying the rule. If the rule is f(x) = x + 5 and the input is 3, the output value is 8.
Output values are the right-hand column in an input-output table and appear along the vertical axis (the y-axis) on a graph. Each input value produces exactly one output value in a function; that one-to-one relationship is what defines a function.
Input and output values work as a pair: the input is what we put in, the output is what we get out. Together, they describe how a mathematical rule or operation transforms one value into another.
When Do Students Learn About Output Values?
Students encounter output values alongside input values, as soon as they begin working with rules and patterns.
Grades 3–5 – Input-Output Tables and Rules
Students identify output values as the results produced by a rule applied to each input, working with tables that show both sides of the relationship.
Grades 6–8 – Output Values in Functions and Graphing
Students connect output values to the dependent variable and the y-axis, analyzing how changing the input affects the output across different function types.
Grades 9+ – Output Values in Advanced Functions
Students reason about output values across complex function types, analyzing range, behavior, and transformations in algebra, precalculus, and calculus.
