What is a Percent?
Literally, “for each 100,” “parts per hundred,” “how many for each hundred.” The ratio of a number to 100.
A percent (or percentage) is a way to express a part of a whole as a fraction out of 100. The word “percent” comes from Latin and literally means “per hundred.”
For example:
- 50% means 50 out of 100
- 25% means 25 parts for every 100
- 100% means the whole amount
We use the percent symbol (%) to write percentages, and they can also be written as:
- Fractions: 25% = \(\Large\frac{25}{100}\) = \(\Large\frac{1}{4}\)
- Decimals: 50% = 0.5
Percentages are a helpful way to compare quantities or describe how much of something there is. We use them frequently in daily life, especially to:
- Measure discounts when shopping (20% off)
- Show test scores or grades (85%)
- Describe chances or probabilities (50% chance of rain)
