  • Why do so many students think they're not "good at math"?

One common misunderstanding is that math is just about memorizing formulas or doing quick calculations. But math is much more than that — it’s about exploration, reasoning, testing ideas, and learning through mistakes. Everyone can learn math when it’s approached as a creative and thoughtful process, not just a set of rigid steps to follow.

  • So, if math isn't about getting the "right answer," what is it really about?

Math is about asking questions, making conjectures, and then testing those ideas. It’s like being a detective: you look for patterns, try strategies, and draw diagrams or models to understand how things work. Sometimes you’ll be wrong — and that’s part of learning. Every mistake is a valuable clue!

  • How to Teach Adding Fractions (and Avoid Common Mistakes like 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/8)

To help students understand how to correctly add fractions, I like to start with something familiar—apples:

If you have 1 apple and someone gives you 2 more apples, how many do you have?
    You’d say: 3 apples, not “3 2 apples.”
You added the quantity (1 + 2), not the name apple.

    Fractions work the same way!

     🔢 Understand the Parts:

Numerator (top number): the quantity—how many parts you have.

Denominator (bottom number): the name of the fraction—what kind of part you're working with (halves, fourths, eighths, etc.).

So in 3/4, the denominator 4 tells you the name of the fraction: fourths,
and the numerator 3 tells you how many of them you have.

     ❌ Common Mistake:

    Students sometimes do this:

    1/4 + 2/4 = 3/8

    That’s like saying “1 apple + 2 apples = 3 oranges.”
It doesn’t make sense because they changed the name of the part (the denominator).

     ✅ The Right Way:

When the denominators are the same, just add the numerators and keep the denominator the same:

    1/4 + 2/4 = (1 + 2)/4 = 3/4

✔ You're still working with fourths.
✔ You just have 3 of them now.

  • How you teach linear equation like x+3=5 for a grade 5 student and a grade 2 student?

    🧠 How to Teach x + 3 = 5 to a Grade 5 Student

At Mathnasium, we use scaffolding to help students build understanding step by step. Here's how we guide them through solving an equation like x + 3 = 5:

    1️⃣ Understand the Equal Sign

We begin by reinforcing the meaning of the equal sign (=).

    Example: 2 = 2
This tells students that both sides are the same or balanced.

     2️⃣ Keep the Equation Balanced

Next, we show that if we add something to one side of the equation, we must do the same to the other side to keep it balanced.

    Example: 2 + 3 = 2 + 3

This teaches the concept of doing the same to both sides—a foundation of algebra.

     3️⃣ Solve for the Unknown

Now we apply this to the equation:

    x + 3 = 5

The goal is to find the value of x.

To do that, we need to get rid of the +3 on the left side. The way to do that is by subtracting 3 from both sides:

    x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3
    x = 2

    🧠 How to Teach x + 3 = 5 to a Grade 2 Student

We introduce the concept using friendly language and real-life context:

“A number and 3 more is 5. What is that number?”

Let them think and try different numbers. You can guide them with a visual or counters:

    "Let’s try 1. Is 1 and 3 more equal to 5?" (1 + 3 = 4 ❌)

    "Let’s try 2. Is 2 and 3 more equal to 5?" (2 + 3 = 5 ✅)

This builds early algebraic thinking without using the word "equation" or symbols yet—just logic and number sense.
