These challenges are the result of skills that never got locked in during earlier years.
In high school, students deal with equations and expressions all the time. If they’re still stumbling over basic fraction work, they waste mental energy on arithmetic instead of reasoning.
According to a study published in Developmental Psychology, students who understand fraction magnitude well in middle school are much more likely to succeed in algebra.

Use the distributive property and combine like terms
Solve one- and two-step equations and inequalities
Apply properties of operations and evaluate expressions
Translate word problems into algebraic expressions
Each of these skill areas supports the others. A student who’s strong in fractions will have an easier time simplifying expressions. A student who understands proportional reasoning will grasp slope faster.
