In our work with students, one of the most common obstacles to algebra success is difficulty with fractions. Many students arrive in high school still unsure how to subtract \(\Large\frac{3}{4}\) from \(\Large\frac{5}{6}\) or convert a decimal to a fraction

These challenges are the result of skills that never got locked in during earlier years.

In high school, students deal with equations and expressions all the time. If they’re still stumbling over basic fraction work, they waste mental energy on arithmetic instead of reasoning.

  • Solve one- and two-step equations and inequalities

  • Apply properties of operations and evaluate expressions

  • Translate word problems into algebraic expressions

Each of these skill areas supports the others. A student who’s strong in fractions will have an easier time simplifying expressions. A student who understands proportional reasoning will grasp slope faster.
