When we're working to strengthen fractions and prepare students for what's ahead, we focus on:
Using number lines to build fraction sense: Placing fractions on a number line between 0 and 1 or beyond, using mixed numbers helps students see fractions as numbers with size and position. It also makes comparing and estimating much more intuitive.
Estimating before solving: Before calculating, students should ask whether an answer will be more or less than 1. For example, in \(\Large\frac{5}{8}\) + \(\Large\frac{3}{4}\), estimation helps prevent errors and reinforces number sense.
Converting to benchmarks: To build fraction sense, encourage your student to compare less familiar fractions to values they already know, like 0, \(\Large\frac{1}{2}\), and 1. For instance, \(\Large\frac{3}{7}\) is just under halfway to 1, so it’s a little less than \(\Large\frac{1}{2}\). This builds the mental math muscle students need to estimate, compare, and manipulate algebraic expressions down the road.
Solving simple equations with fractions: Equations like \(\Large\frac{3}{4}\)x = 6 create a bridge between fraction operations and algebra. Checking the solution by substitution helps build fluency and confidence.

Look for patterns in structured practice: Explore sequences like 4 − 1, 4 − 2, 4 − 3, and continue past zero. Pattern work helps students make sense of how values shift into the negatives.
Connect to real-world contexts: Use temperature changes, elevation gains and drops, or bank balances to show how integers behave in daily life.
Introduce algebra problems that mix signs: Practice simplifying and solving problems like -2x+7=13 to reinforce fluency with signed numbers in the format high school students are expected to navigate.

We often meet students who know how to cross-multiply but can’t tell you what the ratio means. They might set up the right proportion, but when you ask them to explain it, they freeze. That works, until it doesn’t.

Then draw a parallel to a percent problem, like increasing $40 to $50, and discuss what the ratio reveals. This connection reinforces that slope and percent both measure comparative change.

Solving equations by reversing operations: Rather than memorizing tricks, guide your student through each step deliberately. In 2x + 5 = 13, subtract 5 first, then divide by 2. Building input-output tables from verbal rules: Start with a simple rule, like “multiply by 3, then subtract 1,” and have your student apply it to a list of inputs. This helps solidify the idea of a function as a consistent relationship.
Describing function graphs in words: Show a graph (even hand-drawn) and ask your student to describe what’s happening as the x-values increase. This builds comfort reading functions without relying on equations.
Matching equations to tables and graphs: Give your student one format, like an equation y = 2x + 1 and ask them to sketch a table or predict the graph. Switching between forms builds pattern recognition and algebra readiness.
Interpreting coordinate pairs as function relationships: Use points like (4, 9) to reinforce: when the input is 4, the output is 9. Have your student identify rules that could generate those pairs. This improves reasoning around function notation and structure.
