Jennifer Speer
Owner
Jennifer has a unique perspective that allows her to understand your kids and help them.
She is a successful business owner and homeschooling mom of 3! She has the perspective of an educator as well as a busy parent and knows the challenges of both. Jennifer knows how to engage the kids and hold their interest. She keeps them progressing in math in a way they will actually enjoy!
Jennifer has always had a strong grip on Mathematics, earning her B.B.A in Finance at Southwest Texas State University and then owning and operating successful businesses alongside her husband James.
After discovering Mathnasium and seeing what it can offer kids, they made a tough decision to sell their previous business and start all over again. As scary as that sounds, they knew that parents wanted the best education options available for their children. Now she and James have expanded to multiple locations and have thousands of amazing success stories as a result of the passionate instructors, inspiring learning environment, unique teaching style, and world-class curriculum at Mathnasium!
Favorite Math Joke: There are 3 kinds of people in this world... Those who can count, and those who can't.
Fun Fact: Graduated college in 3 1/2 years with a 4.0!
I love Mathnasium because: I get to be a part of a great organization that changes kids' lives! Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?!?
Larry Martinek
Creator of the Mathnasium Method
Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting students' ability to “do” math, thereby increasing students' math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program – one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculas ever produced for teaching math. While Larry is not an Instructor at our Center, he is a valuable asset we can call on to ask about specific students' scenarios for guidance and advice. This has helped to make visits more productive and enjoyable for many of our students.
Ava Hospers
Instructor
Ava is a junior at Johnson High School with a strong STEM background, having completed four years of the UTSA PREP program. She has taken numerous advanced math courses and is currently enrolled in College Algebra. Ava is a two-time varsity swim and water polo captain, earning honors such as Academic All-American and District First Team. She is bilingual and has experience tutoring math to students in China. Ava enjoys working with younger children and brings leadership and enthusiasm to every session.
Favorite Number:
4 — because it’s her water polo cap number.
Favorite Math Joke:
Why don’t parallel lines ever get married? They have so much in common, but they’ll never meet!
5 Years From Now:
Studying biomedical engineering at SMU.
Why Mathnasium:
Ava loves knowing she’s making a difference in students’ lives — one equation at a time. Her favorite moments are when students light up after finally understanding a concept.
Max Mendez

Max is a junior at Great Hearts Northern Oaks. He participates in cross country and track, enjoys playing piano, and loves video games. Max is driven by growth and enjoys helping students improve their math skills.
Favorite Number:

Why She Loves Mathnasium:
She finds it fulfilling to help students build confidence while developing her own leadership skills.
Joseph Sweat
Instructor
Joseph received his Bachelor's in Mathematics from Texas State University. He was originally a chemistry major but a semester of real analysis ignited a fascination with abstract mathematics and proof. He changed from a chemistry major to a math major. His favorite branch of mathematics is topology. When he saw an animation of a coffee cup transforming into a donut and back again he became obsessed with it. His mathematical background gives him the tools to do an amateur study of physics and astronomy to his heart's content. He is also passionate about nature conservation with a focus on reptiles and amphibians. He volunteers with groups to reach out to the public about the importance of protecting these animals and their habitats. At home he is typically surrounded by cats. He enjoys working through his math books and unwinds by playing video games.
Favorite number: Euler's number e. It shows up in the mathematical modeling of many natural phenomenon such as nuclear decay, metabolic activity, and heat flow. It also shows up in unexpected places such as calculating interest and signal processing. Furthermore the trigonometric and hyperbolic functions can all be written in terms of e. Understanding of functions with powers of e is critical for success in calculus, differential equations, analysis, and beyond.
Favorite math joke: An infinite amount of mathematicians walk up to the counter. The first mathematician says I'll have a soda and give each person next in line half of what the previous person got. The clerk says "you mathematicians sure are a crazy lot" and pours out two sodas.
In five years, I will be: Watching my turtles foraging in the sunlight in a garden I planted for them.
I love Mathnasium because: I enjoy helping people overcome their fears about math by helping them realize that math is based on logic and you can reason through a problem with a bit of help. Even if a student has no desire to pursue higher level mathematics the mathematical reasoning abilities they develop will assist them in a variety of other fields such as writing, science, debate, philosophy, and even law.
Students can take 3 easy steps to enroll at Mathnasium.
All students begin their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that pinpoints what they already know and what they still need to learn.
