When we learn about straight angles, we learn them alongside the rest of the angle family. We can't fully understand one without knowing the others:

  • Acute: an angle that measures less than 90°

  • Right: an angle that measures exactly 90°

  • Obtusean angle that measures between 90° and 180°

Properties of a Straight Angle

We can use this checklist to identify a straight angle every time:

  • It measures exactly 180°, no more, no less

  • Its two rays point in exactly opposite directions from a shared vertex

  • It looks like a straight line, flat and unbroken from end to end

  • It represents exactly half of a full rotation, since a full rotation is 360° and a straight angle takes up precisely half of that

How to Draw a Straight Angle

All we need to draw a straight angle is a pencil, a ruler, and a protractor.

You got them? Great, let's go step by step.

1. First, we draw a point on the page. This will be our vertex, the starting point of the angle.

2. We place the center of the protractor on the vertex and align the baseline along the direction of our starting ray.

3. Now we mark a point at 0° on one side and a point at 180° on the other.

4. We use the ruler to draw a straight line through the vertex, connecting both marked points.

5. Finally, we mark the 180-degree arc to show it is a straight angle.

What Is a Straight Angle Pair?

A straight angle pair, more formally known as supplementary angles, is a pair of angles that add up to exactly 180°.

Why is this important? 

In math problems, a straight angle rarely stands alone. More often, we see it split into two angles sitting side by side, sharing a common ray. 

How those two parts relate to each other is one of the most commonly tested ideas connected to straight angles in grades 5 through 7.

Here's how it works. If one angle measures 140°, its supplementary partner makes up the rest:

180 - 140 = 40°
