The goal is to build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen critical thinking skills.
California adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in 2010, alongside dozens of other states.

The good news? You don’t need to relearn everything. A few small shifts in how you talk about math at home can make a big difference in how your child learns.
Here are some strategies we often recommend to parents, rooted in how Common Core encourages students to think.
Instead of asking, “Did you get it right?”, try:
“How did you figure that out?”
“Can you show me another way?”
These kinds of questions help your child verbalize their thinking. For example, if your child says 8 + 7 = 15, you might ask,
"Did you count up? Or did you break apart a number, like making 8 + 2 + 5?"
This turns a right-or-wrong moment into a conversation about strategy.
Common Core often uses visual models to show what numbers mean. You can bring this home with simple tools like:
Base-10 blocks for place value
Fraction strips to compare halves and fourths

For example, if your child is solving –3 + 5, a number line lets them start at –3 and move five steps to the right, landing at 2. This builds a stronger mental picture of how positive and negative numbers interact.

Try:
Asking your child to estimate the total at the grocery store: “We have four items around $3 each. What’s our running total?”
Doubling a recipe together: “The recipe calls for \(\Large\frac{3}{4}\) cup of sugar. What’s double that?”
Planning a meal for four on a budget: “We have $20. What can we make, and what do we need to spend on each item?”
These real-life problems build number sense and make math more meaningful.

Turning everyday moments into math practice, like budgeting, cooking, or problem-solving at the kitchen table, helps kids see math as useful and meaningful.
If your child is using a strategy you’ve never seen, like number bonds, area models, or partial products, resist the urge to correct it. Ask:
“Is that how your teacher showed you?”
“Can you walk me through what you're doing here?”
For example, in multiplication, they might solve 23 × 4 by splitting 23 into 20 and 3:
(20 × 4 = 80) + (3 × 4 = 12) → 80 + 12 = 92
Even if it feels unfamiliar to you, showing interest helps your child feel more confident.
