What is Frequency?
How often something happens in a set of data
In math and statistics, frequency tells us how many times a value or event occurs. It’s a way to describe how common something is within a group or data set.
For example, if we survey 15 classmates about their favorite sport and 7 say “football,” then the frequency of “football” is 7.
Let’s look at another example!
If the test scores in a class are: 80, 85, 80, 90, 80, 85
- The frequency of 80 is 3 (it appears 3 times)
- The frequency of 85 is 2
- The frequency of 90 is 1
We use frequency to:
- Organize data in frequency tables or charts
- Identify patterns and trends
- Compare how often things happen
When Do Students Learn About Frequency?
Grades 4–5 – Introduction to Frequency
Students learn to count how often something occurs and record data in simple tables or charts.
Grades 6+ – Frequency in Statistics
Students use frequency to create histograms, analyze data sets, and calculate relative frequency (percentages).
