What is a Googolplex?

A googolplex is the number 10 to the googol power

A googolplex is one of the largest named numbers in math. It’s written as a 1 followed by a googol zeros. Since a googol is already 10¹⁰⁰, a googolplex is 10 raised to that number:

10^(10¹⁰⁰)

That’s such an enormous number that you couldn’t possibly write out all the zeros, even if you used all the paper in the world! In fact, writing out a googolplex in standard form would take more space than the entire observable universe.

A googolplex helps students stretch their imagination and number sense. It’s not a number we use in everyday math, but it shows how math can describe concepts far beyond what we can see or count.

When Do Students Learn About Googolplex?

Students typically learn about the googolplex while exploring powers of 10 and very large numbers in enrichment lessons or advanced math discussions.

Grades 4–6 – Exploring Extremely Large Numbers

Students discover concepts like a googol and a googolplex as they learn about powers of 10, scientific notation, and the limits of written numbers.
