Linear units are the units we use to measure length, the distance in a single direction. They tell us how long, tall, wide, or far something is, expressed in one dimension only.
Common linear units include:

Inches, feet, yards, and miles (U.S. customary)

Millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers (metric)
Any time we measure along a straight line, such as the height of a wall, the length of a pencil, the distance between two cities, we are using linear units.
Linear units connect directly to linear measurement, and they form the building blocks for measuring in more dimensions.

Area uses two linear measurements multiplied together, expressed in square units (such as cm²).

Volume uses three, expressed in cubic units (such as cm³).

When Do Students Learn About Linear Units?
Linear units are among the first measurement concepts students encounter.
Grades K–2 – Introduction to Linear Units
Students measure length using standard and non-standard units, learning to express how long or tall something is using inches, centimeters, and other linear units.
Grades 3–5 – Converting and Applying Linear Units
Students convert between linear units within the same system and apply them in perimeter, distance, and real-world measurement problems.
Grades 6+ – Linear Units in Geometry and Algebra
Students use linear units in geometric formulas, coordinate geometry, and algebraic expressions that represent length or distance.
