  • Can you help my 2nd grader understand numbers better?

Absolutely! At Mathnasium, our specially trained tutors work with 2nd graders to help them truly understand numbers and how they work.

If your child still relies on finger counting, it often means they haven't yet developed number sense or efficient strategies for basic calculations.

Through caring guidance and engaging face-to-face instruction in a fun environment, we teach students how numbers relate to each other, how to break them apart and put them back together, and how to apply mental math techniques with confidence.

  • Can you help my child understand addition and subtraction with regrouping?

Yes. Our tutors help 2nd graders learn how to:

    • Add and subtract 2- and 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping
    • Use place value models to visualize the regrouping process
    • Solve single-step word problems involving addition and subtraction

We break down each concept into manageable steps to ensure students truly understand how regrouping works.

  • How do you help 2nd graders understand place value and number comparison?

We help students understand hundreds, tens, and ones, use base-ten blocks and expanded form, compare and order 2- and 3-digit numbers, and identify missing numbers in patterns.

  • How do you help students solve word problems in 2nd grade?

We break down word problems into steps that students can follow, using strategies like drawing models, manipulatives, and building verbal reasoning to support students at every step. This helps students:

    • Understand the question
    • Identify the key information
    • Choose the correct operation
    • Show their work and explain their thinking
  • Can Mathnasium help with math-related topics like telling time and using money?

Absolutely! We teach students to tell time to the nearest five minutes on analog clocks, as well as to understand the distinction between a.m. and p.m.

As for using money, we help them learn to identify coins, bills, and their values, and practice solving word problems that involve money.

We use real-world examples to help students understand these skills in a meaningful and memorable way.
