Linear measurement is the measurement of length, which is the distance along a single straight line. It tells us how long, tall, wide, or far something is, measured in one direction only.
Common units of linear measurement include inches, feet, yards, miles, millimeters, centimeters, and meters. All of these measure a single dimension: how far from one point to another.

Linear measurement is the foundation for all other types of measurement. Area uses two linear measurements multiplied together (length × width). Volume uses three (length × width × height). Understanding linear measurement first makes those concepts much easier to build on.
The word linear comes from the Latin linea, meaning line. Whenever we measure along a line in a single direction, we are taking a linear measurement.
When Do Students Learn About Linear Measurement?
Linear measurement is one of the earliest measurement skills students develop.
Grades K–2 – Introduction to Linear Measurement
Students measure length using non-standard units (like paper clips or hand spans) and then standard units like inches and centimeters, building foundational measurement skills.
Grades 3–5 – Units, Conversions, and Precision
Students work with a wider range of units, convert between them, and apply linear measurement in perimeter and real-world problem-solving.
Grades 6+ – Linear Measurement in Geometry and Algebra
Students apply linear measurement in geometric formulas, coordinate geometry, and algebraic contexts, including working with expressions that represent length.
