At Mathnasium of St Albans, our specially trained instructors use a proprietary approach, Mathnasium Method™, to teach maths in a way that makes sense to each child. Rather than drilling procedures, this approach combines personalised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to build understanding that holds up when the questions get harder.
St Albans has no shortage of academically ambitious schools. The Mathnasium Method™ builds the maths foundations they demand.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Reception through to GCSE at our centre on Holywell Hill and online via Mathnasium@home. Sessions run in a supportive group setting where each child receives individual instruction, guided by their own personalised learning plan.
With grammar schools, independent schools and selective entry at several stages all part of the local picture, our instructors are well practised in preparing children for 7+, 11+, 12+, 13+ and Common Entrance alongside their everyday school maths.
Every child at Mathnasium of St Albans begins with a diagnostic assessment that maps precisely what they know and where gaps have formed in their knowledge. From there, we build a personalised learning plan that addresses things in the right sequence, so for instance, a Year 5 child preparing for the 11+ will follow an entirely different programme from a Year 10 child targeting a grade 7 at GCSE.
We build maths understanding carefully, in the right sequence and on solid foundations, focusing on developing the skills that will serve your child in the classroom and beyond.

Specially Trained and Caring Team
Rab Selvaratnam and James Land
Owners
Rab Selvaratnam and James Land are experienced owners of Mathnasium Centres and just happen to have been best friends since the age of 4! Their passion for Maths was ignited at St Albans Boys School. James went on to pursue a degree in Engineering at Durham and qualified as an accountant. Rab also qualified as an accountant, training with PwC. Rab and James' passion for Maths and desire to create real change in students' lives, through bettering their educational development, is why they both chose to work in this industry. They have upskilled themselves in pedagogy with Mathnasium to ensure the highest standards of education are met. In their spare time, Rab is a keen (terrible) golfer and has just started to learn padel, and James enjoys battling his age in a 5-a-side football league.
Edward
Centre Manager
Edward’s passion for Maths started when he was very young, with it quickly becoming his favourite subject at school. After school, he then went on to complete a music degree before joining us at Mathnasium in Whetstone as an instructor. Edward was a student and parent favourite at the centre and quickly climbed through the ranks. Edward is now returning to Mathnasium after a year abroad teaching in Australia. Along with a love for travel, Edward enjoys music, running and all things sport.
Jess
Regional Sales Manager
Jess is a proud graduate of the London School of Economics. She began her Mathnasium journey as the Centre Manager at Mathnasium of Ealing, where she developed a deep passion for helping students grow in confidence and ability through maths. A long-time fan of the Mathnasium Method, Jess is now focused on supporting centres across the region in delivering outstanding experiences for families and driving continued growth. Outside of Mathnasium, Jess enjoys socialising with her friends and watching TV.
Sunny
Regional Manager
Sunny holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Organisational Psychology from King’s College London. With a love for problem-solving and a passion for child development and organisational change, she pursued a career in private education. Her experience teaching various year groups and working in customer service deepened her interest in helping children learn and grow. Now at Mathnasium, Sunny is excited to help boost students’ confidence in a positive learning environment. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching movies, and reading.
Amro
Instructor
Amro is currently a student of Mathematics at Queen Mary University of London and plans to pursue a Master’s in Financial Mathematics. His love for maths began at a young age and has only grown stronger over the years. Tutoring gives him the opportunity to share this passion and help students build confidence in the subject. He finds it especially rewarding to break down complex concepts and witness that “aha!” moment when everything clicks. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball, watching TV and listening to music.
Whether they would like to attend sessions in-centre or online, students can take 3 easy steps to enrol at Mathnasium.
All students begin their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that pinpoints what they already know and what they still need to learn.

Mathnasium of St Albans works with children from Reception through to GCSE, children aged 4 to 16, spanning all Key Stages from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to KS4.
Hertfordshire maintains one of the more active grammar school systems in the Home Counties, and for many St Albans families the 11+ sits at the centre of Year 5 and early Year 6.
We support children through that process and beyond: through senior school entry at 12+ and 13+, through Common Entrance and through GCSE, alongside students who simply want to build deeper maths understanding at any year group.
Our instructors cover the full primary and secondary maths curriculum: number, arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percentages, algebra, geometry, ratio and proportion, statistics, probability and trigonometry, from KS1 through to KS4.
We also cover the numerical reasoning and problem-solving content tested in selective entrance assessments at 7+, 11+, 12+ and 13+.
Sessions are guided by each child’s personalised learning plan throughout.
Private tutoring tends to be reactive, shaped by whatever the child needs help with that particular week.
Mathnasium of St Albans takes a different approach from the start. Every child completes a diagnostic assessment before their very first session, giving us the information we need to build a personalised learning plan with a clear structure and sequence.
Our instructors follow the Mathnasium Method™, a proven teaching approach used across 1,200+ centres worldwide. Sessions take place in a supportive small-group environment: purposeful, structured and always led by what each individual child needs.
Each session also includes time for homework and school preparation, so students can return to their maths classroom with confidence.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach, and not a traditional curriculum.
Our approach combines personalised learning plans with proven teaching techniques to promote deep understanding over memorization. That understanding is what lets them transfer skills to new problems, including the kinds of unfamiliar questions that entrance exams and GCSE papers are specifically designed to include.
In practice, our instructors use mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques, always guided by each child’s personalised learning plan. When required, we can align sessions with the National Curriculum to reinforce school learning, while also filling the gaps that tend to accumulate over time.
We work with maths students of all skill levels. In St Albans, a large proportion of the families we see are preparing children for selective school entry, which means many of our students are already capable and looking to sharpen their performance rather than catch up.
For those children, we build on their existing strength, while extending into harder problem-solving, improving speed and accuracy, and developing the kind of consistent performance that grammar and independent school assessments reward.
For students who are struggling or have fallen behind, we work back to the point where their understanding is solid and rebuild from there, step by step.
Yes! The 11+ is one of the most common reasons families come to Mathnasium of St Albans.
We recommend starting 11+ preparation at least one to two years ahead of the relevant exam, giving enough time to systematically work through knowledge gaps and build the speed and accuracy these assessments demand. We also support children preparing for 7+, 8+, 9+, 10+, 12+ and 13+ entry to preparatory schools in and around St Albans.
Yes. Mathnasium of St Albans supports students sitting 12+ and 13+ entrance assessments for independent senior schools, as well as Common Entrance at 13+.
The maths content at these levels draws heavily on KS3 topics, algebra, geometry, ratio and number, and our instructors build preparation plans around the specific demands of each child’s target schools.
Yes. Our instructors work with Year 10 and Year 11 students on personalised GCSE preparation plans shaped by their current grade, target and the specific topics where they need the most work. We cover the full GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability and statistics.
St Albans has a number of competitive secondary schools, including selective grammar schools where the standard expectation for GCSE maths is high. We help students in those environments meet that bar, and help everyone reach their own personal best.
Yes. We support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs maths papers, working across both the Arithmetic paper and the Reasoning papers with a personalised plan built around each child’s specific gaps. For many St Albans families, Year 6 also coincides with 11+ preparation, and we are well practised in supporting both goals at once.
We also work with Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check and Year 2 children working towards their KS1 teacher assessments.
Yes. Mathnasium@Home offers the same structured, personalised support as in-centre sessions, delivered live by our specially trained instructors. Children follow their own personalised learning plan in real time, so the quality of instruction is consistent whether sessions happen in St Albans or online.
Mathnasium of St Albans operates on a flat monthly membership fee.
Following the diagnostic assessment, we will recommend a session plan tailored to your child's learning needs and goals. Most children attend two to three sessions per week.
Get in touch using the Contact Us button on this page, by calling 01727 322830 or by emailing [email protected].
We will arrange a diagnostic assessment to build an accurate picture of where your child is in their maths and what type of support they need most.
After the assessment, we will walk you through the results and the personalised learning plan we have put together for your child and answer any questions before sessions begin.
