Counting an item a certain number of times based on the amount of another quantity.
"For each" is a phrase that tells us to repeat a count once for every unit of something else. It links two quantities together, making it one of the key phrases that signal multiplication in a word problem.
For example: if there are 4 bags and 3 apples for each bag, we count 3 apples once for every bag:
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, or 4 × 3 = 12 apples in total.
The phrase "for each" tells us that the same amount (3 apples) repeats for every unit of the other quantity (each bag). That repeated equal grouping is exactly what multiplication describes.
Other phrases that carry the same meaning include "per," "for every," and "each."
When Do Students Learn About "For Each"?
Students encounter "for each" language from the very beginning of multiplication, often before they know the operation by name.
Grades K–2 – Equal Groups and Repeated Addition
Students use "for each" thinking when making equal groups and solving simple repeated addition problems, building the foundation for multiplication.
Grades 3–5 – "For Each" as a Multiplication Signal
Students learn to identify "for each" and related phrases in word problems as signals to multiply, applying this understanding across a wide range of problem types.
Grades 6+ – "For Each" in Ratios, Rates, and Algebra
Students encounter "for each" in unit rates, ratio problems, and algebraic expressions, where it describes how one quantity scales with another.
