Standards of Learning (SOL) is a standardized test administered in the state of Virginia to assess students' proficiency in core academic subjects. These tests are designed to ensure that students meet the educational standards set by the state and are prepared for future academic challenges.
The SOL assesses:
Reading: Grades 3-11
Mathematics: Grades 3-11
Science: Grades 5, 8-11
History/Social Science: Grades 4, 8-11
Writing: Grades 8, 11
SOL results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students in Virginia take the SOL math test annually in grades 3 through 8. High school students also take SOL math assessments at the end of the course in which they are enrolled, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
Students typically take the SOL math test in the spring. Districts schedule their own specific testing days within the state's testing window, so exact dates can vary by school.
End-of-course testing typically takes place in January for fall semester courses and in May or June for spring and year-long courses.
For grades 3 through 8, most school divisions schedule their spring SOL math tests between late April and late May. Local divisions set their own specific dates within the state's testing window, so we recommend checking your school's calendar to confirm your student's testing dates.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as testing approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills steadily, without last-minute pressure.
SOL Math is aligned to Virginia's Mathematics Standards of Learning, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level or course. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
For course-based high school assessments, students can expect content specific to Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II, including linear and quadratic functions, geometric reasoning, and polynomial relationships.
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Virginia can cover every topic a student may encounter on the SOL math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
SOL Math results are reported using a scaled score ranging from 0 to 600. A score of 400 is the passing threshold, and 600 represents the highest possible score. Students also receive a performance level: Fail, Pass/Proficient, or Pass/Advanced, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
SOL test scores assess students' mastery of core subjects. In Virginia, SOL scores, including those in math, can impact students':
School grades and transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
Progress and support: Detailed reports give parents and educators a clear picture of each student's strengths and areas for improvement relative to grade-level standards, helping identify students who may need additional academic support.
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the SOL.
If students struggle with reading-heavy math questions, we can still help on the math side by teaching them how to identify what a problem is asking, choose a first step, and organize their work clearly, while keeping instruction focused on math.
Mathnasium’s SOL math tutoring focuses on the math concepts students will encounter on the exam.
Using our proprietary teaching approach, the Mathnasium Method™, our specially trained tutors follow personalized learning plans to address each student's knowledge gaps and guide them in developing solid foundations for math mastery.
We employ proven teaching techniques to help students enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills and build the confidence they need to excel on the SOL math exam.
Mathnasium’s SOL math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ fosters math mastery by:
Using personalized learning plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.
Building on existing knowledge: Guided by the personalized learning plan, our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
Math is cumulative, and falling behind rarely happens all at once. More often, one concept didn't fully click, and everything built on top of it has felt shaky ever since. At Mathnasium, we find where that started and work forward from there.
Every student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Locates and rebuilds the foundational skills that are making current material harder to grasp
Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to Virginia's Mathematics Standards of Learning
Prepares students for the multi-step problems they will encounter on SOL
Deep understanding is the goal because when students truly know the math, they are prepared for whatever the test puts in front of them.
Math anxiety may be more common than you think, with as many as 30% of K-12 students reporting it, and tests have a way of bringing it to the surface. At Mathnasium, we address both the skill gaps and the confidence gaps that drive that feeling.
We help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing SOL-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the SOL testing window approaches.
There is no difference between our in-center and online SOL math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.
To enroll at Mathnasium, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.
Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We advise starting the SOL math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
