The Mathnasium Method™
Our MCAS math tutors provide face-to-face instruction in a supportive environment to help students learn and master the math concepts they'll encounter on the MCAS. We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach that combines personalized learning plans and interactive teaching techniques to address students’ knowledge gaps, expand their mathematical thinking, and teach the skills necessary to excel on the exam.
A Method That Gets Results
94%
of parents report an improvement in their child’s math skills and understanding
90%
of students saw an improvement in their school grades
93%
of parents report their child’s improved attitude towards math after attending Mathnasium
Students can attend Mathnasium at one of our local learning centers or online where they will receive the same quality of live, face-to-face instruction.
MCAS, or the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, is an annual statewide standardized testing program that measures students' mastery of essential skills across several subjects: English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.
The MCAS assesses:
ELA for students in grades 3 through 8
Mathematics for grades 3 through 8 and grade 10
Science and technology/engineering (STE) for grades 5 and 8.
In high school, students are assessed in STE subjects including biology, chemistry, introductory physics, or technology/engineering.
Students take MCAS Mathematics in grades 3-8 and grade 10.
Because math builds year after year, doing well in one grade often depends on skills from earlier grades (for example, fractions and proportional reasoning). That’s why it helps to address gaps early, not only right before testing.
MCAS math testing happens in the spring, and the exact dates depend on the grade level and the school district’s schedule. Massachusetts DESE publishes a statewide testing schedule each year, and schools choose specific test days within the state’s testing windows. Many districts spread testing across multiple sessions.
MCAS Math is aligned to Massachusetts grade-level expectations and includes a mix of skills and multi-step reasoning. The exact mix varies by grade, but it includes topics such as:
Operations and algebraic thinking
Number and operations (including fractions)
Ratios and proportional relationships
Expressions, equations, and functions foundations
Measurement and data
Geometry
Statistics and probability
Mathnasium Learning Centers in Massachusetts can cover all the topics tested.
We start with an assessment, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the right skills for your child’s grade and goals.
We also help students practice the test behaviors that matter, like organizing work clearly, checking answers efficiently, and staying steady on multi-step problems.
MCAS uses scaled scores, ranging from 440 to 560, so 560 is the highest scaled score on the math test.
Score reports are often easier to understand when you look at the score and the achievement level description. That combination can help families see whether a student is meeting grade-level expectations and where to focus next.
MCAS test scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Massachusetts, MCAS scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:
School grades: Scores impact the school’s report card grades.
Promotion and support: They assess whether students meet grade-level standards, helping identify those needing extra support.
Individual progress: Detailed reports provide parents and educators with insights into each student's academic strengths and areas for improvement.
For high school students, MCAS is also connected to Massachusetts graduation requirements through the Competency Determination (CD) in ELA, math, and science (with requirements that vary by graduating class and current regulations).
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the MCAS.
If students struggle with reading-heavy math questions, we can still help on the math side by teaching them how to pull out key information, decide what the question is asking, and choose a clear first step.
Mathnasium’s specially trained tutors provide comprehensive preparation for MCAS math by focusing on math concepts students will face on the MCAS.
Our specially trained tutors use personalized learning plans and proven teaching techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to excel on the exam.
We also include guided practice that looks like what students see on tests, so they build both skill and familiarity with common formats.
When students feel behind, it’s usually because a few missing skills make questions feel overwhelming.
At Mathnasium, we help by:
Starting with a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint gaps
Having tutors follow a personalized learning plan that rebuilds foundations step by step
Connecting those foundations to grade-level MCAS expectations, so students can handle multi-step questions with more confidence
Students get guidance and live, face-to-face instruction in a caring and fun environment, so progress feels steady and doable. As students improve, we make sure they can apply skills in different ways, not just in one familiar format.
Math test anxiety often comes from not knowing what to expect or worrying about getting stuck.
We help students feel more in control by:
Building confidence through mastery of the underlying skills
Practicing MCAS-style questions in small, manageable steps
Teaching simple routines for test day, like breaking multi-step problems into parts, checking work efficiently, and staying calm when a problem looks unfamiliar
We also focus on recovery, so if a student misses a question or feels stuck, they know how to reset and move forward instead of freezing.
Our MCAS math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:
Personalized assessment and learning plans: We begin by evaluating each student’s current skill level, pinpointing strengths and knowledge gaps related to MCAS requirements.
Building on existing knowledge: The student’s personalized learning plan builds upon what they already know, enabling them to bridge knowledge gaps and expand their mathematical thinking.
Math that makes sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to break complex concepts down into manageable bits.
There is no difference between our in-center and online MCAS math tutoring. Our online sessions are live, face-to-face, and led by the same tutors you would meet at your local Mathnasium Learning Center. Students follow the same personalized learning plan in either setting.
To enroll at Mathnasium, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals. The assessment also gives families a clear starting point, making it easier to see progress over time.
Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the MCAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test, and develop steady confidence without last-minute pressure.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.

The best place for your kids’ tutoring, providing individual attention to each child, opening doors for a bright future.
