PSSA, or the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, is a statewide standardized testing program designed to measure student proficiency in core subjects including English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.
The math and ELA portions of the test are aligned to Pennsylvania’s expectations and are built from the state’s Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content, which outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
The PSSA assesses mathematics and ELA in grades 3 through 8, while science mastery is assessed in grades 5 and 8. Individual scores can help teachers identify students who may need additional educational opportunities, while school and district results support curriculum and instruction planning.
Students take PSSA Math in grades 3 through 8.
If your child is in high school, Pennsylvania uses different state assessments (Keystone Exams), but Mathnasium can still help with the math skills your student needs for course success and testing confidence. Many families also use middle school PSSA preparation to build stronger foundations for algebra and geometry later on.
Students in grades 3 through 8 take the PSSA math test once a year in the spring, during a testing window set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Your child’s school will choose the exact testing dates within that window.
To stay current, we recommend checking your school’s calendar as testing approaches.
PSSA Math focuses on the grade-level skills students are expected to learn in Pennsylvania classrooms. That includes concepts, procedures, and multi-step problem solving.
Depending on your child’s grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Patterns, expressions, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis and probability
Students will also see different item types, including selected-response questions and open-ended questions that require students to show their work and explain their thinking.
Mathnasium Learning Centers in Pennsylvania can cover all the topics assessed on the PSSA Math. We start with the skills your child is ready for, then build toward grade-level expectations so students feel confident solving the kinds of problems they will see on the test.
PSSA results are reported using scale scores and performance levels (Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and Advanced). Because the scale-score reporting can vary by grade and may be updated over time, there is no universal highest score that applies in every case.
What matters most is helping your child strengthen the skills needed to reach, or move beyond, Proficient, while developing the accuracy and reasoning to handle PSSA-style questions with confidence.
PSSA test scores evaluate students' mastery of core subjects. In Pennsylvania, PSSA scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:
School grades: Scores impact school accountability ratings.
Promotion and support: They assess if students meet grade-level standards, helping identify those needing extra support.
Individual progress: Detailed reports help parents and educators monitor each student's academic strengths and areas needing improvement.
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including the PSSA.
If students struggle with science questions that use charts and tables, we can still strengthen the underlying math skills (reading graphs, working with data, interpreting units) during math instruction.
Mathnasium’s PSSA math tutors focus on key math concepts connected to PSSA expectations, then help students apply those skills the way the test requires.
Our specially trained tutors combine personalized learning plans with a variety of interactive teaching techniques to help students bridge their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to excel on the exam. We also practice showing work clearly for open-ended items and building confidence with multi-step questions so students don’t get stuck when a problem looks unfamiliar.
As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.
Our PSSA math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:
Personalized assessment and learning plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to PSSA requirements.
Building on existing knowledge: Personalized learning plans build upon what the student already knows, helping them close their knowledge gaps and gradually expand their mathematical thinking.
Math that makes sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them enhance critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
When students feel behind, it usually means they have skill gaps that make new lessons harder to understand. That is why Mathnasium starts with a diagnostic assessment to identify your child’s current skill level and pinpoint missing foundational concepts.
Then, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that helps your child:
Rebuild key skills step by step
Strengthen grade-level understanding
Practice the types of multi-step problems common on PSSA Math
This approach helps students make steady progress while preparing for classroom assessments and state testing at the same time.
Math test anxiety is common, especially when students have had stressful testing experiences in the past. At Mathnasium, we help students feel more in control by building both skills and confidence.
We support anxious test-takers by:
Filling skill gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing PSSA-style questions in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for pacing, checking work, and staying focused
Building familiarity with problem formats so fewer questions feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident when testing season arrives.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online PSSA math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium learning center, and students follow a personalized learning plan in either format.
To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.
Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the PSSA math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Getting started with the PSSA math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
