South Carolina Readiness Assessment (SC READY) is an annual statewide standardized test designed to evaluate students' proficiency in key academic subjects.
The SC Ready assesses:
English language arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
Mathematics for grades 3-8
Science for grades 4 and 6
SC READY results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students in grades 3 through 8 are required to take the SC READY math test annually. The format varies slightly by grade level:
Grades 3 through 5: The math test is typically administered over two days, divided into Part A and Part B.
Grades 6 through 8: The test is usually completed in one day, with a no-calculator section followed by a calculator section.
We recommend checking your school's calendar for exact testing dates, as districts schedule their own days within the state's testing window.
Students in grades 3 through 8 take the SC READY math test once a year in the spring. Districts schedule their own specific testing days within the state's testing window, so exact dates can vary by school.
Starting math tutoring well before the spring window gives your student time to build skills steadily, without the pressure of cramming. Please check your school's calendar to plan ahead.
SC READY Math is aligned to South Carolina's College- and Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in South Carolina can cover every topic a student may encounter on the SC READY math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
SC READY Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels.
Scale scores range from 1278 to 1682 depending on the grade level. Students also receive a performance level: Does Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, or Exceeds grade-level expectations, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
SC READY test scores serve to evaluate the students’ proficiency of core academic subjects. In South Carolina, SC READY scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:
School grades and transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
Progress and support: Detailed reports give parents and educators a clear picture of each student's strengths and areas for improvement relative to grade-level standards, helping identify students who may need additional academic support.
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. We prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including SC READY math.
Many science questions involve math skills like reading graphs, working with data, and interpreting measurements. When those skills come up in schoolwork, we can help students feel more confident using them, while keeping instruction focused on math.
We employ personalized learning plans that focus on the math concepts students will encounter on the SC READY to prepare students for the exam.
Using our proprietary teaching approach, the Mathnasium Method™, our specially trained tutors focus on addressing each student's knowledge gaps so they can build solid foundations for math mastery. We work with students to increase their knowledge gradually so they can truly understand SC READY math and build the skills they need to excel on the test.
Mathnasium’s SC READY math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:
Using personalized assessment and learning plans: We begin by assessing each student’s current skill level which allows us to design a personalized learning plan to guide them in mastering SC READY math.
Building on existing knowledge: We start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
Falling behind in math is rarely about effort. More often, a handful of foundational gaps are making grade-level work feel harder than it should. At Mathnasium, the first step is always understanding exactly where a student stands.
Every student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Targets and rebuilds the foundational skills that are holding the student back
Develops grade-level understanding aligned to South Carolina's College- and Career-Ready Standards
Prepares students for the multi-step problems they will encounter on SC READY
We focus on building deep understanding because students who truly grasp the math behind a problem are better equipped to handle whatever the test puts in front of them.
For many students, math test anxiety is less about the test itself and more about what happens when a problem feels unfamiliar. At Mathnasium, we work to take the uncertainty out of that moment by making sure students are genuinely prepared for what they will see.
We support anxious test-takers by:
Closing knowledge gaps so the material on the test feels familiar, not intimidating
Working through SC READY-style problems regularly in a low-pressure, supportive setting
Practicing strategies for getting started on tough problems, staying organized, and checking work
Building enough familiarity with common question formats that test day holds fewer surprises
Over time, consistent sessions and caring, face-to-face guidance help students build the confidence they need as the SC READY testing window draws closer.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online SC READY math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium learning center. The same personalized learning plan guides progress in either setting.
To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.
Most students attend Mathnasium 2 to 3 times per week. However, our tutors may recommend a different session frequency based on each student’s unique goals and needs.
We advise starting the SC READY math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Getting started with the SC READY math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
