Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) is an annual statewide standardized test designed to evaluate students' proficiency in key academic subjects.
The KSA evaluates students in:
Mathematics: Grades 3-8, 10, 11
Science: Grades 4, 7, 11
Writing: Once per grade band (elementary, middle, and high school)
Social Studies: Once per grade band (elementary, middle, and high school)
KSA results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students in Kentucky take the KSA math test annually in grades 3 through 8 and in grade 10.
The Kentucky Department of Education requires districts to administer the assessment during the last 14 instructional days of the school year, so exact dates vary by district. For many districts, the spring 2026 window is expected to fall between April 13 and June 5, 2026.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as the end of the year approaches to confirm your student's specific testing dates.
Students in Kentucky typically take the KSA math test in the spring. Districts schedule their own specific testing days within the state's testing window, so exact dates can vary by school.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as testing approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills steadily, without last-minute pressure.
KSA Math is aligned to Kentucky's Academic Standards, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
Students in grade 10 can expect questions that draw on higher-level algebra and functions, as well as statistics and modeling concepts.
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Kentucky can cover every topic a student may encounter on the KSA math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
KSA Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels. Scale scores typically range from 400 to 600 depending on the grade level. Students also receive a performance level: Novice, Apprentice, Proficient, or Distinguished, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
KSA scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Kentucky, KSA scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:
School grades and transfers: Scores impact school accountability ratings and can influence students' ability to transfer between schools.
Progress and support: Detailed score reports help parents and educators see where each student stands relative to grade-level standards and identify students who may need additional academic support.
Mathnasium prepares students for the KSA math test by using personalized learning plans that target their specific needs.
Our specially trained tutors break down complex concepts into manageable steps and focus on developing a deep understanding of math. We build critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure students are confident and well-prepared for standardized math exams, including the KSA.
Mathnasium’s KSA math tutors employ the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students unlock their full math potential. The Mathnasium Method™ fosters math mastery by:
Using personalized assessment and learning plans: We begin by assessing each student’s current skill level which allows us to design a personalized learning plan to guide them in mastering KSA math.
Building on existing knowledge: Guided by the personalized learning plan, our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
Students who feel behind in math often describe the same experience: the work feels harder than it should, but they're not sure exactly why. At Mathnasium, we find out why and then we fix it.
Every student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Pinpoints and rebuilds the foundational skills the student is missing
Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to Kentucky's Academic Standards
Builds the problem-solving confidence needed for the multi-step questions on KSA
When students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than just the steps, they are ready for whatever the test puts in front of them.
It is estimated that between 20 and 30% of K-12 students experience math anxiety. Tests can exacerbate it if the student feels uncertain, doesn't know what to do next, or worries about getting stuck.
We help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing KSA-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the testing window approaches.
No, there’s no difference between our in-center and online KSA math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are conducted by the same tutors you would meet at your local Mathnasium Learning Center.
To join Mathnasium, students participate in a diagnostic assessment which helps us pinpoint their math strengths and areas for improvement.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that sets students on the best path toward their academic goals, such as excelling on the KSA exam.
We usually recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may adjust the frequency based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We advise starting KSA math tutoring early to give students ample time to learn and master the math concepts they’ll encounter on the test.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
