Students can choose to attend their Mathnasium sessions in person or online. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are led by the same tutors you would meet at your local learning center.
ISAT, or the Idaho Standards Achievement Test, is an annual statewide standardized testing program that measures students' mastery of essential skills across three subjects: English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.
The scores are designed to help schools and districts understand strengths and needs across Idaho, and they also provide a clearer picture of where a student may benefit from extra practice or enrichment moving forward.
ISAT Math is typically given in Grades 3-8 and Grade 11.
The state also offers an optional ISAT “Challenge” assessment for Grades 9-10 at participating schools.
ISAT testing happens during the spring testing window each year, usually between March and May, with specific dates set by the state and scheduled by districts and schools.
Because schools set their own schedules, students may take math on a different day than ELA, and the test may be split across multiple sessions.
ISAT Math is designed to measure grade-level math understanding and problem-solving. Students will see a mix of question types, including computer-adaptive questions and a longer performance task that asks students to apply math to multi-step, real-world-style problems.
Math is cumulative, so the test can also reveal earlier skill gaps that affect current learning. That’s why Mathnasium helps students prepare across all the major topics the ISAT may assess, such as:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Algebraic thinking (expressions, equations, functions foundations)
Geometry and measurement
Data, graphs, and probability
Our specially trained tutors also help students practice the habits that matter on ISAT-style questions: reading carefully, organizing work, checking answers, and staying steady on multi-step problems.
ISAT Math uses scale scores rather than percentage scores. The highest possible score depends on the grade level and the test’s scoring scale, but the top end of the math scale reaches into the low 3,000s.
If you’re trying to interpret a score report, the most helpful piece is usually the student’s achievement level (whether they are meeting or exceeding expectations), along with the skill-area breakdown. That breakdown helps you see why a score landed where it did, such as whether a student is strong in computation but needs more support in multi-step reasoning or data questions.
ISAT test scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Idaho, ISAT scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:
School grades: Scores impact the school’s report card grades.
Promotion and support: They assess whether students meet grade-level standards, helping identify those needing extra support.
Individual progress: Detailed reports provide parents and educators with insights into each student's academic strengths and areas for improvement.
Schools also use participation and performance data as part of broader accountability and reporting, but day-to-day classroom grades typically come from classwork, quizzes, tests, and teacher evaluations rather than the ISAT score itself.
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center that prepares students in Idaho for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests.
However, many math questions involve reading and interpreting information. In our math sessions, we can help students get better at the math side of word problems by teaching them how to identify what’s being asked, choose a first step, and organize information clearly, while still keeping the focus on math.
Mathnasium’s ISAT math tutoring provides comprehensive preparation for the test by focusing on math concepts students will face on the ISAT and the problem-solving skills they need to apply those concepts confidently.
During our ISAT math tutoring sessions, we break down challenging problems into manageable steps using a range of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. Our specially trained tutors empower students to truly understand and enjoy math, while helping them close their knowledge gaps and enhance the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they can leverage for success in the ISAT and other math exams.
Mathnasium’s ISAT math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students learn and master math. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:
Personalized assessment and learning plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to ISAT requirements.
Building on existing knowledge: Our tutors build upon what the student already knows, helping them bridge their knowledge gaps and gradually expand their mathematical thinking.
Math that makes sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to each student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them truly understand and enjoy math.
This teaching approach helps students retain skills longer and apply them more confidently when the test questions look unfamiliar.
We like to say that Mathnasium’s tutors are “teaching for understanding,” which means that we teach math in a way that makes sense to our students.
Combining personalized learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques, we help students build knowledge level by level and truly understand the math concepts they will face on the ISAT math test. That usually starts with hidden bottlenecks that hold students back, like place value, fraction sense, or equation setup, and then moves into grade-level applications and reasoning.
See how we work with students looking to catch up in their math class.
We work to replace test anxiety with familiarity and a clear plan.
At Mathnasium, students build confidence by practicing the skills they need most, learning reliable problem-solving routines, and getting plenty of guided practice with multi-step questions.
We also teach simple strategies that help in the moment, like breaking problems into smaller steps, using visual models, and checking work efficiently.
ISAT assessments are not timed, which means students can focus on accuracy and reasoning instead of racing the clock.
No, there isn’t. Mathnasium’s online ISAT math tutoring is the same as our in-person sessions. Students who choose to attend Mathnasium online will receive the same quality of live, face-to-face instruction and even work with the same tutors they would meet at their local learning center.
To start their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals, whether that means catching up, strengthening grade-level skills, or getting ahead. The assessment also gives families a clear baseline, so progress is easier to see and celebrate as skills improve.
Your local learning center will determine the ideal frequency of sessions based on your student’s skill level and specific goals. We typically recommend 2 – 3 sessions of 60 minutes per week.
If testing season is close, some students benefit from a short-term increase in session frequency to build momentum. If there’s more time, a steady routine can be the best way to build lasting confidence and reduce pressure as the spring window approaches.
Getting started with the ISAT math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
