Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) is an annual statewide assessment program designed to evaluate students’ proficiency in key academic subjects.
The CMAS assesses students’ mastery of:
English language arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
Mathematics for grades 3-8
Science for grades 5,8, and 11
Social studies for grades 4 and 7
CMAS results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students take the CMAS math test in grades 3 through 8.
Students in Colorado typically take the CMAS math test in the spring, during a state-designated testing window. Districts choose their own specific testing days within that window, so exact dates can vary by school.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as testing approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills steadily, without last-minute pressure.
CMAS Math is aligned to Colorado Academic Standards, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Colorado can cover every topic a student may encounter on the CMAS math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
CMAS Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels.
Scale scores typically range from 650 to 850, so 850 is the top of the reported scale. Students also receive a performance level: Did Not Yet Meet Expectations, Partially Met Expectations, Approached Expectations, Met Expectations, or Exceeded Expectations, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most actionable piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where a bit of targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
CMAS test scores assess students' proficiency in key academic subjects. In Colorado, CMAS scores, including those in math, can impact students in several ways:
School grades and transfers: Scores influence school report card grades and can impact the students' ability to transfer between schools.
Progress and support: Detailed reports give parents and educators insight into each student's strengths and areas for improvement relative to grade-level standards, helping pinpoint students who may benefit from additional academic support.
No, Mathnasium is a math-only learning center. Our tutors prepare students for a variety of K-12 math classes and tests, including CMAS.
Many science questions involve math skills like reading graphs, working with data, and interpreting measurements. When those skills come up in schoolwork, we can help students feel more confident using them while keeping instruction focused on math.
Mathnasium prepares students for CMAS by helping them learn and master the concepts they will encounter on the exam.
Our specially trained tutors use personalized learning plans combined with proven teaching techniques to help students develop a deep understanding of math. We address each student's knowledge gaps and add new concepts in sequence, working with them to expand their mathematical thinking, enhance problem-solving skills, and build the confidence they need to excel on CMAS and on their math journey.
As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.
Mathnasium’s CMAS math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:
Using personalized learning plans: We create personalized learning plans using assessment-based insights to put each student on the best path to math mastery.
Building on existing knowledge: Our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to each student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
When students feel behind, it's usually because a few missing skills are making grade-level questions feel harder than they should. At Mathnasium, we start by finding out exactly where those gaps are.
Every student begins with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Rebuilds missing foundational skills step by step
Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to Colorado Academic Standards
Builds confidence with the kinds of multi-step problems students will see on CMAS
Our goal is to help students truly understand how math works so they can approach the test with confidence.
It is estimated that between 20 and 30% of K-12 students experience math anxiety. Tests can exacerbate it if the student feels uncertain, doesn’t know what to do next, or worries about getting stuck.
At Mathnasium, we help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing CMAS-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the testing window approaches.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online CMAS math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are held by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.
To begin their Mathnasium enrollment, students participate in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.
Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the CMAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
