Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) is an annual statewide standardized test designed to measure students' proficiency in key academic subjects.
The GMAS includes end-of-grade and end-of-course measures.
End-of-grade measures:
English Language Arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
Mathematics for grades 3-8
Science for grades 5 and 8
Social Studies for grade 8
End-of-course measures for specified high school courses, including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, American Literature and Composition, Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, Physical Science, Biology, United States History, and Economics/Business/Free Enterprise
GMAS results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students take the GMAS end-of-grade math test in grades 3 through 8. High school students may also take GMAS end-of-course math assessments when enrolled in courses such as Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
Math builds on itself from one grade to the next, so a gap at one level can make the next feel harder than it should. Addressing knowledge gaps early gives students the best chance to build lasting confidence as they move through each grade.
Students in Georgia typically take the GMAS math test in the spring, between April and May. Districts schedule their own specific testing days within the state's testing window, so exact dates can vary by school.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as the testing window approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills at a steady pace, without last-minute pressure.
GMAS Math is aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level or course. Depending on the grade or course, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
For end-of-course assessments, students can expect to work with course-level content such as linear equations and functions in Algebra I, geometric reasoning and proofs in Geometry, and polynomial and exponential relationships in Algebra II.
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Georgia can cover every topic a student may encounter on the GMAS math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
GMAS Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels.
For end-of-grade assessments, scale scores range from 210 to 590. For end-of-course assessments, scores range from 210 to 590 as well. Students also receive a performance level: Beginning, Developing, Proficient, or Distinguished, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level or course-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is thriving and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
GMAS scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Georgia, GMAS scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:
School grades and transfers: Scores impact school accountability ratings and can influence students' ability to transfer between schools.
Progress and support: Detailed score reports give parents and educators a clear picture of each student's strengths and areas for improvement relative to grade-level standards, helping identify students who may need additional academic support.
Mathnasium tutors help students build the skills and confidence they need to excel on the GMAS math test.
In our GMAS math tutoring sessions, we break down challenging concepts into manageable steps using various mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. Our dedicated tutors empower students to truly understand and enjoy math while helping them fill in any gaps in their knowledge. We also focus on building the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for success on the GMAS and other math tests.
Mathnasium’s GMAS math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students unlock their math potential. The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:
Using personalized learning plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.
Building on existing knowledge: Guided by the personalized learning plan, our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
Students usually fall behind in math because of a few missing skills that are making grade-level questions feel harder than they should. At Mathnasium, we start by finding out exactly where those gaps are and building from there.
That is why our enrollment process begins with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Rebuilds missing foundational skills step by step
Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence
Builds confidence with the kinds of multi-step problems students will see on GMAS
Our focus is on building true understanding and mastery of math concepts, so students have the skills and confidence to tackle any math class, test, or standardized assessment.
Math test anxiety might be more common than parents think, and it usually comes from uncertainty about what to do next or worry about getting stuck. At Mathnasium, we provide thoughtful and caring guidance, taking into account the student’s skill level, learning style, and pace.
We help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing GMAS-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the testing window approaches.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online GMAS math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.
To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put each student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals such as excelling on the GMAS math exam.
Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the GMAS math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
